Hypnotherapy and Hypnosis offer a long term solution which incorporates happiness. So says Alexia Elliott, Clinical Hypnotherapist, Master practitioner of NLP &TLT at Empowerment Hypnotherapy Leicester: weight loss Leicester
The dieter’s dilemma
Forget will power!! Why? You might ask, a doctor would not ask you to use your willpower to reduce your blood pressure this appears to be a prevailing attitude, that all we need is willpower and self control. In the 1993 gallop poll, the most common obstacle to losing weight citied was, willpower or the lack of it.
The world of dieting crosses many personal boundaries, for example
What you should eat?
When you should eat?
How much will satisfy you?
How can a diet know what triggers of your hunger? Or what will please your palate?
These decisions should be about preference and choice with respect to an individual’s anatomy and body signals, good guidance is important and useful but ultimately you have to be responsible for when and how much you eat don’t you?
These well intended suggestions that “you should eat less”, or “you shouldn’t of eaten that ice-cream” (food police) can set of an inner food rebellion where you use food as a weapon, sometimes referred to as forget you eating or F**k you eating.
In physics resistance occurs as a reaction to force, this principle can be seen in society, riots for example, they erupt due to the force of authority, often the simple act of being told what to do, can trigger rebellion (even if it’s something we want to do)
Rebellion is a normal act of self preservation, it’s your space and your boundaries, if you were to consider a personal boundary as a large brick wall surrounding you with only one gate, only you can open the gate if you choose to – no one else is allowed inside, unless you invite them in, within the wall resides your feelings thoughts and biological signals. People often assume they know what you need and tell you what to do; in one sense they are attempting to pick the lock to your gate or invading your personal boundaries.
You may be wondering, so if dieting doesn’t work, if dieting makes you fat then what do I do? I ask people who are embarking on yet another diet if they can do it for the rest of their life? The most common response is no. if you want to lose weight, feel good and enjoy your life at the same time, you could experiment with being a conscious eater and make small changes which you can get really good at doing for life.
Some suggestionsStart with simple changes drinking water daily, start with three glasses a day.
Eat your meal at the table (not watching TV)
Before you eat take a few deep breathes and eat slowly incorporating all of your senses, so you can really enjoy and taste the food.
Eat when you’re hungry stop when you are full
Enjoying changing your relationship with food it is a liberating process I wish you well.

Chronic dieting for weight loss has been shown to.
- Teach your body how to retain more fat when you start eating again, in a form of biological compensation which helps the body store more energy or fat after dieting.
- Slow the rate of weight loss after each successive attempt to diet, this has been shown to be true in both rats and human studies.
- Decrease metabolism, (dieting triggers the body to become more efficient at utilising calories by lowering the bodies need for energy)
- Increase binges (research has shown that humans and rats overeat after a chronic food restriction, food restriction stimulates the brain to start a cascade of cravings, to eat more after a substantial weight loss, and studies have shown that rats prefer eating more fat when people have shown a preference to foods high in fat and sugar.)
- Causes your body shape to change from yo-yo dieting, the lost weight tends to regain weight in the abdominal area, and this fat storage increases the risk of heart disease.
