Until 2002, I had a destructive relationship with food, I felt controlled by it, I loved it and hated it at the same time. The compulsion to eat was incredibly powerful, the compulsion would usually win. I would try and ignore the compulsion and avoid eating, depriving my body of food.

Which more often than not lead to overeating later in the day a (binging) session, leaving me feeling over full, stuffed, and hateful towards myself. To get some release from these stuffed feelings I would make myself sick. As a little girl I was often sick for “no apparent reason”. With hindsight I know it was a maladaptive coping strategy, which would appear during times of high emotion or distress.

There was a general pattern,

· I would feel upset about something,
· I would have a feeling in my stomach, it felt like it was a bottomless pit, I would feel starving hungry. (This wasn’t always immediate to the above it might be a few days after the initial upset)
· I would feel intoxicating insatiable cravings and powerful desires to cram food into my mouth
· An inner voice would appear saying E.g. “go and eat something you’re fat anyway it will make you feel better”
· I would search for sweet stuff, chocolate or carbohydrates (white bread)
· I would eat so much could not get anything else into my body
· My Inner tyrant would appear in my mind saying “ stop it you idiot you have no self control”
· I would then feel terrible, bloated and fat
· And have to get rid of the food I have consumed.
· Make myself vomit
· Feel guilty and angry with myself at my lack of control.

This was a secretive process I didn’t share it with others, In many ways it was a secret from myself, as it took place at an unconscious level out of my conscious awareness, it happened in seconds. The cycle is often described as being similar to falling out of a tree as we’re falling through the branches, we don’t notice we’re getting cut and bruised. Its only when we hit the ground that we realize we are hurt.

Despite feeling guilty and angry, there was a part of me that felt cleansed and better for vomiting and it seemed to discharge some of those uncomfortable emotions which started the initial binge. Looking back I can see how and why this coping strategy ran for so long, it worked, it gave me the result of getting rid of the some of the horrible feelings. I didn’t know what they were, I just didn’t like them and needed to get rid of them, and food helped me do this.

I remember being on Hypnotherapy training we were discussing weight related issues and how powerful hypnotherapy is, in helping people lose weight or overcome weight & food related issues. Many people do not consider Hypnosis as an option for weight loss, like me, people think how can changing your thinking, change your body or make you lose weight? I remember feeling annoyed by the suggestion that it was something in my head, that made me feel and act so bad towards food and my body, I was screaming out “surely you have stop eating or go on a diet to lose weight or to be happy”

As the lecturer continued to talk, something began resonate with me, (maybe I woke up) I realised my thoughts did make a difference, if my thoughts were different, I would respond differently to food. I considered what makes me different to others who don’t have these issues? I realised it is their thoughts, a simple but profound realisation. Milton Erickson MD worked had great success with people who wanted to lose weight or change old and destructive patterns with food;

he gave his clients some very basic rules:
· Eat when you’re hungry
· Stop when you’re full, I prefer comfortably satisfied
· Eat like a gourmet (have you notice the majority of gourmets are slim? They are conscious eaters)
· Be conscious and aware when you eat, incorporate all of the sense this is vital for developing a healthy relationship with food.
